Position: Extreme Network Engineer / Architect & Lead SME

Overview:

The role supports a $135M network migration project from Cisco to Extreme Networks for a large enterprise healthcare client. The engagement will start as a contract (6–12 months) with the potential for multi-year continuation.

Details:

  • Location: Remote (CST time zone)

  • Travel: Up to 4 weeks total (travel + expenses fully covered by client)

  • Duration: 6–12 months (with potential for extension)

  • Commitment: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Top Skills Required:

  • Senior-level Extreme Networks Routing & Switching (R&S) – both wired and wireless

  • Experience leading large-scale Extreme migration projects (preferably from Cisco)

  • Automation/Scripting experience (Python, Ansible, etc.) to streamline migration

  • Some Palo Alto background preferred

  • Hands-on support for approximately 6 months of staff augmentation

  • Willingness to travel 1–2 times to Iowa during the project

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Extreme Architect & Lead SME to drive the migration of an enterprise-grade Extreme Networks environment from Cisco infrastructure for a leading medical customer.

This role requires deep technical expertise in Extreme NetworksCisco, and Layer 2 networking, with the ability to architect, design, and lead a complex migration project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the migration from Cisco to Extreme Networks with minimal disruption to mission-critical healthcare operations.

  • Architect and design Layer 2 extensions across data centers and remote sites.

  • Assess existing infrastructure and develop a comprehensive migration strategy.

  • Collaborate with network engineering teams to design, test, and implement migration plans.

  • Serve as the lead SME for all Extreme and Cisco networking solutions.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation (HLDs, LLDs, migration runbooks, network diagrams).

  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, HITRUST, and other healthcare regulations.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex Layer 2 networking issues pre- and post-migration.

  • Mentor junior engineers and share best practices for Extreme and Cisco solutions.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 15+ years in network architecture, design, and engineering.

  • Deep expertise in Extreme Networks (Fabric Connect, VSP, XOS, etc.) and Cisco (Catalyst, Nexus, ACI).

  • Proven success leading large Extreme-to-Cisco (or vice versa) migrations.

  • Strong understanding of Layer 2 technologies (VLANs, VXLAN, STP, EVPN, MPLS).

  • Experience designing data center interconnects and Layer 2 extensions.

  • Automation/scripting experience (Python, Ansible) preferred.

  • Healthcare industry background highly desirable.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.

  • Excellent leadership and communication abilities.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Extreme Certified Specialist (ECS) or Extreme Certified Expert (ECE)

  • Cisco CCNP/CCIE (Enterprise or Data Center)

  • ITIL, CISSP, or equivalent
